Lakhimpur residents demand immediate repair of embankments

 FROM A CORRESPONDENT

LAKHIMPUR, Feb 9: Though there are only two months left  for the rainy season to set in, the Government of Assam as well as the Lakhimpur district administration has not initiated adequate steps to repair the massive damages in the district caused by devastating floods last year. Due to the lackadaisical attitude on the part of the government, the department concerned has allegedly done nothing even to repair the unplugged embankments of Ranganadi river despite the consecutive demands of the social organizations. The office of the Water Resource Department of the district is now sitting idle after launching a few geo-tubes in the unplugged point of the embankment of the river at Bogolijan.
So, fearing havoc in the next rainy season, the local people of the greater area, led by Lakhimpur district body of Brihattar Asomiya Yuva Mancha, held a protest gathering at the breached point of the embankment on Thursday. The protestors shouted slogans slamming Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, State Water Resource Minister Keshav Mahanta, Lakhimpur MP Pradan Baruah, Lakhimpur LAC MLA Utpal Dutta and Lakhimpur district administration regarding the issue.
The working president of the organization, Anupom Saikia sharply criticized them as they had paid no due heed to reconstruct the unplugged embankment to relieve the flood victims before the next rainy season sets in. The protestors demanded immediate reconstruction of the embankment or threatened to boycott the panchayat poll.
