Lalfield turns garbage dumping ground, people express concern

From a Correspondent
Haflong, Oct 11: Conscious citizens of Haflong expressed serious concern over the dumping of garbage in the Lalfield (Town Committee field) that has led to an unhealthy environment in and around Haflong township for several weeks.
The Haflong Town Committee (HTC) is responsible for keeping Haflong clean by dumping garbage in some specified area. Of late, the people of villages near the specified dumping ground near Gurubari did not allow the HTC to dump garbage there, following which the HTC was forced to dump garbage in Lalfield. The HTC had to face such problems earlier also but was successful in convincing the people. But finding a suitable dumping ground has become an uphill task for the HTC. The HTC has prepared a project for solid waste management but it also requires land and at least three months to be executed. Now for three months the HTC can come up with no other dumping place other than Lalfield.
Talking to this correspondent, HTC chairman Anil Daolagupu said his staff and also the NCHAC authority had tried a lot to convince the villagers but the villagers, even after receiving money, objected to dumping garbage by the HTC. He hoped that the proposed project if implemented, would solve the garbage dumping problem. Else the people of Haflong will have to suffer as the garbage cannot be dumped in any other place other than Lalfield.
