SSA teachers in Arunachal to launch pen-down strike

 From our correspondent
Itanagar, Nov 10: The central executive committee of All Arunachal Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan Teachers’ Association (AASSATA) has announced a pen-down strike from November 20-25 to push for enhancement of SSA teachers’ salary as per the 7th CPC recommendations.
“The government can adopt a tangible policy if it wishes to, but failure to fulfill our demands will force us to go for an indefinite strike,” AASSATA president Tarak Agung Tarh told reporters at the Arunachal Press Club here.
Claiming that the SSA teachers do not receive decent remuneration, Tarh said they often cannot afford proper food and education for their children. “The government is yet to come up with any mechanism despite taking ample time to address our demands. We will no longer compromise with mere assurances,” he said.
Tarh said the Education parliamentary secretary and the chief secretary had unofficially called the AASSATA leaders for discussion but it did not yield any solution.
All SSA teachers will be off duty during the strike, he added.
“The Centre is ready to increase the salary of SSA teachers, but this depends on the State government’s willingness for the increment as the salary of SSA teachers is being paid in the ratio of 90:10,” Tarh said. The Centre bears 90% of the pay while the State government provides 10%, he said. “We do not want any facilities that regular teachers of the State are entitled to but the government can at least give us a salary that is on par with them,” said AASSATA General Secretary Techi Bollo, resenting the step-motherly treatment towards SSA teachers who are contributing in improving the State’s education scenario.
AASSATA also demanded immediate revocation of an order by the joint director (DEE), asking the DDSE concerned to furnish the list of in-service SSA teachers who possess the APTET/CTET certificate against the primary and TGT for their regularization.
