International Women's Day observed at Tura

SHILLONG, March 8: The International Women’s Day was observed today at Dikki Bandi Stadium, Tura, West Garo Hills on the theme “Press For Progress” at a function organised by BAKDIL Tura in collaboration with the district Social Welfare Office and Meghalaya Rural Bank. Women groups, SHGs and various women organisations from all the districts of Garo Hills region attended the function marked by a day-long awareness programme on health and nutrition, improving sustainable and allied activities for women, entrepreneurship for rural women, rights of women and the like. Dr. Minakshi A Sangma, Superintendent, Civil Hospital, Tura, Balsa B Sangma, president Mother’s Union, Tura, among others spoke on the occasion and highlighted the constructive role that women in the society play while urging for further improvement.
In his capacity as the Chief Guest, Ram Singh, Deputy Commissioner, WGH thanked the Director, Bakdil, for organising the programme to pay tribute to all womenfolk of the society. He further said that despite Meghalaya being a matrilineal society, man often occupy a better position and women, to a certain extent, are excluded from important decision-making. He added that certain parity issues need to be addressed to strengthen women rights. He also highlighted incidence of oppression and other social issues faced by women. He appealed to the SHGs to work for the uplift of women. This has been stated in a press communiqué.
