Medical colleges, cancer wing Hek's priority

Shillong,  March 8:  Newly appointed Health Minister of Meghalaya, AL Hek said his main priorities are to construct medical colleges as well as to make the cancer wing at Shillong Civil Hospital operational.
It may be reminded that Hek who is now a BJP-legislator also held the Health portfolio in the previous Congress-led Meghalaya United Alliance (MUA) Government before he was dropped in August 2016.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Hek said, “This is my second term as Health Minister and I want to complete the pending works which was left incomplete and that is to set up medical college in Shillong and in Tura and other works which are still pending.”
It may be mentioned that the previous Congress-led MUA Government had planned two medical colleges in the State, one at Tura and another in Shillong.
The Tura Medical College will be a Government run institute while, the Shillong Medical College will be built on a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) mode.
Meanwhile Hek also said that he intends to make the Cancer Wing at the Civil Hospital, Shillong, operational.
The building has been constructed but the Government is yet to install the machineries and equipment. The construction of the Cancer Wing began in March, 2011, at a cost of Rs 26 crore.
