NEHU teacher suspended for 'sexual harassment'

Tura, Nov 13: Accused of allegedly sending inappropriate text messages to a girl student, a professor of North Eastern Hill University (NEHU, Tura Campus has been placed under suspension.
An official on Monday said that an inquiry into the allegations is being conducted against Professor SC Srivastava of the Department of Rural Development & Agriculture Production (RDAP), who was suspended on Thursday. The victim had filed an alleged case of sexual harassment to the university authorities against Srivastava.
The allegation of “serious misconduct” by the professor has caused resentment among students. Women’s groups have also widely condemned the act and demanding his arrest and termination from service.
Srivastava has been accused of sending late night inappropriate text messages to a university student. Students staged protests against the alleged misconduct and demanded immediate action against the professor.
A Women’s Cell delegation from the university’s headquarters in Shillong visited the Tura Campus and met the victim, who apprised them of the incident.
University sources said that some more students from the campus came forward and gave their statements to the women delegation about the accused professor sending inappropriate Whatsapp messages on their cell phones.
Besides recording statements of the victim and other complainants, the Women’s Cell team that visited the Tura Campus also collected other relevant evidences regarding the case. The inquiry report into the sexual harassment case is expected to be out soon.
