New administrative unit announced

Shillong, Nov 13: The Government of Meghalaya on Monday announced creation of a new administrative unit – Rongjeng Administrative Unit in East Garo Hills district with headquarters at Rongjeng. The administrative unit will function from its headquarters from Tuesday, The creation of the administrative unit by the State government comes in the run-up to Assembly elections scheduled early next year. Interestingly, the new administrative unit is close to Songsak, a constituency that present Chief Minister Mukul Sangma is eyeing for as the second constituency to contest from in the next Assembly elections. Notwithstanding the eyebrows being raised at some quarters on the latest move of the government, outspoken Congress Minister Ronnie V Lyngdoh quipped “If we perform till the last days of our tenure, will it mean that we are playing politics?” “Don’t link governance with politics. We will do whatever development works are required till the Assembly is dissolved,” Lyngdoh asserted. Meanwhile, the government has also notified the list of villages that will fall under the purview of the new administrative unit.
