By the second decade of the twentieth century, the divide between the Meiteis and the Bishnupriyas was heading for a new phase. Bishnupriyas who had been resignedly allowing their language to fade into oblivion were waking up to the reality. The ones who had been willy-nilly assigning greater weight to the Meitei language were gradually having the moral fiber to insist on using their own language in a non-Meitei set-up outside Manipur. The Brahmins didn’t really have the teeth to put a check on this rebellious awakening. This came as a stumbling block to the ongoing process of Meitei-ization. Socio-cultural affairs began facing new problems as a result of this language divide.

Voices from the Northeast
Joydeep Hazarika
Northeast came alive on the 13th and 14th of October in the nation’s capital Delhi. In a literary meet titled “Voices from the North East”, some new writers from the region came together to highlight the literature that comes from the region’s oral traditions and myths. The event was organized by Jaipur-based literary consultancy Siyahi at Delhi’s India Habitat Centre. The two-day event comprised of readings by some known writers of the north-eastern region and also a performance by the well-known band East India Company. Mita Kapur, who heads Siyahi said that their organization has always stressed on highlighting writers from such remote areas of the country and said that the Northeast has much more to offer than what seems. She saw this event as an opportunity to bring out these voices in front of mainstream India’s arena.
The Power of Modelling
Dr. Gayatri Bezboruah
On a bright summer morning, a three year-old angel is sitting in the kitchen, where her mother is in conversation with the help of the house. With a spoon in her hand, she goes rat-a-tat-a-tat on the table, chopping the imaginary onion. Then she wipes her eyes, with a frown on her face. She then decides to grind masalas the Indian way, and keeps testing the mixture for the right consistency. Frowns, keeps grinding, then smiles and stops. Now, she’s tired, leans back on her chair and says, “Will someone give me a cup of tea?” Scenes like this are powerful reminders of how closely our children watch and learn from us. We are actually modelling behaviour for our children every moment of every day. They are always watching us, and thus they learn what to do and how to do it. In other words, they learn our approach and our style.

A computer is a machine that manipulates data according to a set of instructions. Although mechanical examples of computers have existed through much of recorded human history, the first electronic computers were developed in the mid-20th century (1940-1945). These were the size of a large room, consuming as much power as several hundred modern personal computers (PCs). Modern computers based on integrated circuits are millions to billions of times more capable than the early machines, and occupy a fraction of the space. Simple computers are small enough to fit into a wristwatch, and can be powered by a watch battery. Personal computers in their various forms are icons of the Information Age and are what most people think of as “computers”. Questions by Pankaj Phukan in this week’s Readers Write.

Boundless Determination!
Anurag Rudra
It's not everyday that you come across a figure who excels in various facets of interests and passions, a person who pursues his calling with sheer tenacity and will and ultimately comes out triumphant. Polishing one's skills and inculcating the desire, the passion to pursue one's calling in life requires courage, an iron will and above all, boundless determination. The process is somewhat like a metamorphosis, like gold which glimmers brilliantly after it burns in acid. The Northeast has produced many such exponents who have attained the heights of success and acclaim in their respective fields, who have made us proud in the international arena, people who have led by example and the sheer power of their achievements.

TIANG SERI
Hemanta Kr Sarmah
It is a system like our Vaastu Shastra to design buildings for all round happiness in Malayasia. But it does not have any scientific logic or reason like our ancient system. This is mainly practiced by the shamans or witch doctors who are called dukun or bomoh. Literally, Tiang Seri in Malay means the main pillar of the house. Malayasia has a matriarchal society like in Meghalaya and so the main pillar of the house is called the “mother pillar” or Tiang Ibu. The measurement of the pillar is done by the length of the outstretched arm of the matriarch which is called as one “depa”. Like the Chinese, Malayasians have eight animals corresponding to eight directions. They are Dragon (naga),
