THE POWER OF HARBOURING HUMOUR
‘‘So, your funny friend is going to be here? Good, we’re all going to have a great time,” “I love this movie because I can’t stop laughing till it ends, and I’ve already seen it five times,” “Ha, ha, he has a great collection of really funny jokes.” We always remember people who can make us giggle and laugh. A sense of humour and being funny can be very important skills for our children. Whether as children or when they grow up into adults, having a funny side has many benefits, as we all know. The important lesson for us parents to understand is that a sense of humour and being funny is a skill that can be developed. And contrary, to popular belief it is not something we have to be born with. Children (or adults) who are funny are perceived to be friendlier and find themselves more at ease in social situations. They find it easier to make friends. Funny children also gain more confidence and learn to believe in themselv

Lost in Christina
We shifted to United Kingdom in 1982, after Dad won his commonwealth scholarship for his Ph.D in Community Medicine and later landed up with the job of a Professor, at Sussex University, close to Brighton. We lived in a small shack with two rooms to accommodate us, but luck had really rained out its soul over dad and after a couple of months he surprised me with a new house just five minutes away from the Brighton sea-shore. My first entry into the house was greeted by the breeze of the maple tree that ruffled its leaves, in greeting to my arrival just beside the window of the room that was offered to me. Maa perhaps would have loved it if she wouldn’t have held herself back in India to prepare for her civil service examination, for which she toiled day and night burning all the midnight oil and gave up her child as well as her husband in her obsession of reaching the summit. Her lust for power always fell heavy over her love for her daughter. Womanhood in its sterile attempts
Still neglected
We often keep hearing slogans of uniting different parts of India. But unfortunately, in practice, these slogans never work. Especially here, in the north-eastern part of the country, the slogans remain only a slogan. Although it is difficult to ascertain the reason, it is for sure that we, the people of Northeast, are often subjected to deprivations in different aspects. Be it the Central Government or any other national authority or perhaps the ‘National Media’, nobody gives enough attention to this part of the country and its inhabitants. We have always had to struggle to achieve what we rightfully deserve. Now, one may call it imaginary but unfortunately this is the truth. Take a look back, and it won’t be difficult to observe that at different times, there are different examples of such negligence from the ‘national’ authorities. Yes, it’s an allegation we have been shouting since long, but nobody seemed to give an iota of thought to our c

No postage greetings from America
Spring is here, officially from the 20th of March. So much goes by the calendar here. Even seasons come in a pattern as if, in varied hues and colors, painting the landscape like a rainbow, announcing a good feeling, in fact a feeling so overwhelming, that even the time table changes. We lose an hour in the morning, setting our clocks forward, hence getting more light and beauty to enjoy in the evenings. And we pay a price for that. Kids are woken up early, office goers jets off early, everything is hurried and huffed on the first day of Spring. Some friends need to be reminded and some children come up with queries. Clocks are manually re-set and digital ones diligently set with no help – Amazing! The perfectly trimmed trees with stark branches start birthing pale green leaves, the pre-teens, somewhat awkward yet carrying themselves up with sensitive pride. The fully bosomed and blossomed trees stand dangling in voluptuous bundles of white, the teenage years, youthful, vibrant
