| THE POWER OF TEACHING SELF-CONTROL |
|
| However much we try to prevent it, our children do sometimes melt down in the middle of a crowded store, at a holiday dinner with extended family, or at home. And yes, however much we pretend it didn’t really get noticed, it can be extremely frustrating. We can wish such situations away only when our little ones understand how to respond to such situations without just acting on impulse. Teaching self-control skills is one of the most important things that we parents can do for our kids because these are some of the most important skills for success later in life. By learning self-control, our children can make appropriate decisions and respond to stressful situations in ways that can yield positive outcomes. For example, if we say that we’re not serving ice cream until after dinner, our children may cry, plead, or even scream in the hopes that we will give in. But with self-control, they can understand that a temper tantrum means we may not serve the ice cre |

| Softly falls the rain |

| She left the apartment without a backwards glance. She could feel his eyes on her, but she willed herself not to look back. It was over. Finished. And redemption lay in the road ahead. It was a road fraught with pain and loneliness, but it was the only way forward – away from this morass of despair and disillusionment; away from him.
She walked to the Zoo tiniali bus-stop, standing amongst the strangers, as she tried to think what to do next. She felt a constriction in her throat and mistiness in her eyes, but she was determined not to fall apart. There was time enough for tears and regrets later, but right now, all she wanted to do was to crawl someplace safe and lick her wounds. It was as though, she was looking at a vivid painting left out in the open under a softly falling rain, until all the colours were smudged and slowly washed out, so that nothing of the original remained.
She made up her mind now; she would go home. Home to Jorhat, where her widowed mother still lived |

| UMBRELLA ERRATICA! |
|
| Only recently did I realize how much skill, poise and perfect timing are required for the graceful handling of an umbrella. Sadly, I am yet to possess any of these virtues and as a result, whenever I have used an umbrella, I have rarely benefitted from it. Whenever there was harsh sunshine and I opened my umbrella, I reached home tanned. Whenever there was rain and I opened my umbrella, I reached home drenched. Anyway, and whenever there was someone on the street I tried to avoid and I opened my umbrella to shield my face from, the person invariably called, ‘Hi Rashmi!’ I owe all this to the way the erratic umbrella behaves, some of which I list below.
The Praying Umbrella: It is that behaviour of an umbrella when, at the time when I require it the most over my head during a heavy rain along with wind, the umbrella itself decides to say a prayer to save it from getting wetter, by raising its spokes heavenwards, as I would raise my arms. In the process, the whole umbrella |

| Vaastu for Apartments |

| Q 1. I am living in an apartment and it has a lift right in the middle of the building. Will it affect us, as it is the brahmasthan of the building?
Rakesh Agarwal, Guwahati
Ans. In such a case, we will consider your individual unit only and ignore the entire building. If your main door is not facing the lift or the staircase directly, then there is no problem provided it is located in the right direction.
Q 2. I have kept an aquarium under the staircase. Is it good according to vaastu?
Kabita Talukdar, Dispur.
Ans. Water features are associated with wealth. It is very good to have one at north, east or northeast. If your staircase is situated in these directions, then it is very good. It should be cleansed from time to time so that the water does not stagnate. Feng shui recommends nine goldfish with one black arrowana. But do not keep a water feature at Southwest, west or south.

| 10 powerful things happy people do differently |
|
| What is the difference between happy people and unh-appy people? Of course, it may be very obvious, happy people are happy while unha-ppy people are unhappy. Well, that is correct, but let’s have a look at the things these people do differently and why? Have a look:
1. Love versus Fear: People who are really happy, fear less and love a lot more. They see each moment, each challenge, each person as an opportunity to discover more about themselves and the world around them.
2. Acceptance versus Resistance:  Happy people understand that you can’t really change a situation by resisting it, but you can definitely change it by accepting that it is there and by understanding that there might be a reason for its existence. When something unpleasant happens to the |
