THE POWER OF MOTIVATION AND NEEDS
Why do we eat, drink, strive to get ahead, seek approval, try new things and look for change? To answer these questions, we have to look at the psychology of motivation. Motivation is a state within a person that leads to goal-directed behaviour. We may be motivated by our needs or by incentives. Needs are defined as states of deprivation. When we have not eaten for a while, we begin to feel hunger or the need for food, which is the goal. Hunger and thirst are physiological needs. However, we may also show needs for achievement, affiliation and social approval. These learned needs show more variability than the physiological ones. Incentives are objects, persons or situations perceived as capable of satisfying needs. Food, money, attention, approval can all act as incentives and influence our behaviour. A drive is a condition of arousal within a person that is associated with a need or an incentive. Abraham Maslow (1908-1970) believed that we all experience motives that direct us

Blood and Stone
There was a loud gun shot. He knew then that the fight had started. More shots were fired and only a flimsy display cabinet stood between them and the continuous firing. He noticed Jenna grimly firing back at them with her Glock 17, but it was really no match for their automatic weapons. The firing stopped abruptly and the room was suddenly quiet. He realized why the firing had stopped; Jenna was shot twice in the stomach. They came around the shattered display cabinet. The man clad in white shirt picked him up by the collar and asked only one question, ?Where is it??
Spoonerism?s effects on Mannerism
Though she drools over its ice creams and mocktails, my dear friend Abeli could never say Baskin Robbins. She ends up blurting Robinson Basket! Nor can she say Pollito?s. Here she says Poplins. She gives us a good laugh but her slips are not exclusive. Because someone else in my creative family never could address Ms Margaret Alva without ending up saying Alvaret Marga. And the dear husband would unfailingly say that he ?picked his fork with his pork?. It scared the breath out of our poor lungs for we thought it was a disease. But then, the breath was boot right pack into our lungs when we found that there were others too whose tongues played truant by belching out phrases like Farty was pun when what they had actually wished to say was Party was fun! Then someone told me about this History teacher who told one of his students, Why did you hiss my mystery lecture? The student took a while to decode it as Why did you miss my History lecture? And when the student gave vague reasons for b

A woman of integrity: PADMAKUMARI GOHAIN
Sunilesh Borgohain, an advocate and the son of the three-time MLA of Moran, calls it daredevilry. He narrates with relish how a young man, who was a job aspirant, approached his mother for a character certificate and was denied it since he was a stranger to her. When he angrily cast aspersion on her integrity, saying that the refusal was dictated by his failure to give her bribe, the veteran Congress leader gave him a tight slap. The politician made her point. It was also enough to cool down the young man?s temper. The same spunk was on display when Padmakumari Gohain saw her inability to speak English or Hindi as no reason not to interact with the first Prime Minister of independent India, Jawaharlal Nehru, during his visit to Dibrugarh after the Great Earthquake in 1950. Many attributed it to her blue blood but there was more to her than that. GROWING UP IN A ROYAL HOME Khukun, as she was called at home, was born on February 24 in 1913 at Shillong. Her father, Rajkumar Siddhesw

Vaastu, according to vedic words, means a suitable place for construction of a house. In Sanskrit, it literally means a place where people reside. It is applicable for houses, mansions and palaces, temples, townships and places where people work. The ancient townships of Mahenjodaro and Harappa were constructed as per vaastu. The sages or Rishis used vaastu principles in their rituals. The altars, mandapas and places of fire worship or havan were made according to vaastu norms. In ?Upanishads?, there are numerous mentions of palaces, student homes, temples, cowsheds, ashrams etc being constructed as per vaastu. DEVELOPMENT:- Unlike other studies, there is no particular book or scripture dedicated entirely to vaastu. There are ancient books on yoga like Patanjali?s Yoga or nmedicine like ?Charak Samhita? but none on vaastu. But in almost all the ancient vedic books have mentioned about the use vaastu principles. The ancient times can be divided into vedic kaal,Purana kaal and Madhy
