Bodos left homeless in NDFB(S) carge

Guwahati, January 5: They are fighting for the Bodos for an “independent Bodoland”. But the banned Bodo rebel group NDFB(S) left 800 people of their own community homeless after they unleashed the recent carge killing 81 Adivasis.

Bodo villagers of 13 villages in Biswath Chariali had fled to Aruchal Pradesh after the recent carge and retaliatory attacks. The villagers had fled on the morning of December 24, the morning a day after the carge. They were told that their villages will be attacked.

Since then, they were camping at Kolpungla of East Kameng district until the sub divisiol officer (civil) of Biswath persuaded them to return to the State.

However, the 800–odd villagers are now living in a temporary shed made of tirpals at the paddy field at No 2 Sudemsri village.

“We have lost everything in the violence. All the houses in the 13 villages have been burnt down. There is not a single house left unharmed. I had six houses – all of them were set ablaze. All my belongings, including stacks of paddy, utensils and electronic items have been gutted,” said Mahiran Basumatary, headmaster of Balija LP School.

“There are only ashes all around the villages now. Where will the people go back? They do not have the resources now to rebuild their homes,” Basumatary added.

The Biswath Chariali sub divisiol administration has assured assistance to the villagers, but the villagers are yet to get it.

“Unless someone helps us, we cannot go back to our villages,” he said.

The villagers had sought three police pickets in the areas for their security. But the government is yet to set up those. However, there are 25–odd security men deployed in the place where the villagers are camping.

The teacher said already there are signs of the ailments among the villagers who are having to pass their days in pathetic condition beneath the open skies in spite of the winter chill. “There is an urgent need for medical attention…,” he said.
