Terror bid in Guwahati foiled

Guwahati, January 6: A major disaster was today thwarted when police caught a hardcore ULFA militant who was sent to plant a bomb in Guwahati.

However, despite the success, Assam Police say the threat to the capital city continued to be there with both the ULFA and NDFB(S) trying to target it. Politicians, including those of the BJP are also on the radar of the two outfits, prompting the police to step up security of some of them.

ADGP (law and order) RM Singh said Kamal Lashkar alias David Asom was arrested from Roha in gaon.

“He was sent here by ULFA’s western Assam commander Dristi Rajkhowa to plant a bomb in the city in the run–up to the Republic Day. The bomb was to be delivered to him in Guwahati. We were following him from Goalpara after getting the information,” Singh said.

A 2012 recruit, David is also behind extortion cases in the stone–quarry belt of Hojai.

“Both the NDFB(S) and ULFA are trying to target the city. We have enhanced the security apparatus, engaging 50 companies of central paramilitary force besides the existing police,” Singh said.

The ADGP said the outfits might also target politicians, even lower rung leaders, in a bid to divert the attention from the recent carge in Sonitpur and BTAD. “Following the inputs, we have provided security to some vulnerable politicians,” he said, without ming any.

At least eight NDFB(S) cadres have been arrested so far since the operations against the outfit were intensified after the December 23 bloodshed.

Two cadres – Sudip rzary and Netaji Basumatary – caught in Alipurduar by West Bengal Police were being brought to Assam.

One Bodo rebel was gunned down at Bogijan in Golaghat today. He was identified as Sanjay rzary. A 9mm pistol and two gredes were seized from the slain militant.

Two UDLF cadres were held in Hailakandi, while a KPLT militant arrested in Hamren. Two KNLA militants were also arrested at gaon.

Commissioner and secretary (home) LS Changsan said Assam Police has so far registered 128 cases in connection with the NDFB(S) massacres.

She said two of the four relief camps in Alipurduar of Bengal have been closed down and the 500–odd inmates are being brought back to the State.

Assam State Disaster Magement Authority CEO PK Tiwari said currently there are 1,29,828 inmates in 77 relief camps.
