Work sincerely, Governor tells forest minister

‘Merciless rhino killings raise questions on integrity of protectors of forests and wildlife’

By Our Staff Reporter

Guwahati, January 7: In a strong–worded statement, Assam Governor Padmabha Balakrish Acharya has raised questions on the efficiency of the forest staff who have failed to check the rampant poaching of rhinos in the State and has suggested an overhaul of the security set–up.

Describing the rhino as a symbol of the State, Acharya expressed deep “concern, hurt and pain” at the frequent and merciless killing of the one–horned rhinocerous.

The Governor, in a statement, said that despite sufficient security arrangements in the Kaziranga tiol Park, it is quite shocking that “such condemble incidents are taking place on a regular basis”.  This, he added, puts a question mark on the integrity and efficiency of the protectors of our forests and wildlife.

The Governor has directed the officials concerned to take urgent preventive action and pinpoint responsibility on the guilty. He has also instructed the forest officials to identify the persons accountable for such heinous "tiol crimes" and to punish them severely without mercy, as per the law.

The Governor also gave instructions to change the whole set–up of security personnel without any delay, if required.

The Governor said, “We are accountable to the people of Assam and the tion. Our inefficiency may result in an ecological void which may never ever be filled again.”

He appealed to all animal lovers, eco–conservationists and related organisations as well as the general public to nip all conspiracies of such crimils in the bud.

The Governor also urged the Minister of Forests and Environment to do justice to his Ministry and discharge his responsibilities to the State and its people and resources, carefully, sincerely and judiciously.

Two days back, poachers had killed a rhino in Kaziranga tiol Park and had taken away its horn.

Last year, 29 rhinos were killed in the Unesco World Heritage Site.
