Varsity faculty dies from drowning

DIBRUGARH, January 9: An assistant professor of Dibrugarh University (DU) drowned in the Arabian Sea at Diu on Thursday.

Assistant Professor in the Centre for Social Work Studies (CSWS), Amarjyoti Kashyap, was bathing in the sea when the incident happened. He and his colleague, Assistant Professor, Ansai Bathou Basumatary, were accompanying a team of 16 students of the Centre on an industrial tour to Gujarat. They were on an outing to Diu prior to leaving for Dibrugarh today. A sea wave carried the teacher away to some distance but the others maged to pull him out. But Kashyap died on the way to the hospital.

The team had left Dibrugarh on December 30.

The Director in charge of the Centre, Prof Jayanta Borbora, and Law Officer of DU, Debraj Sharma, left for Ahmedabad today and were on the way to Diu at the time of filing this report. They are expected to perform all formalities and bring back the body by flight to Dibrugarh. Four of the students have stayed back while the others caught the scheduled train today.

Kashyap had joined DU in 2010. He origilly belonged to Jorhat and is the father of an infant.
