Chennai Apollo Hospitals launches liver clinic

Guwahati, May 25 : Apollo Hospitals Chennai has launched a liver clinic in Guwahati, in association with Apollo Hospital Guwahati, the first of its kind in Assam. This will allow residents of Assam and neighbouring states to have access to distinguished Liver care expert from Apollo Institute of Liver Diseases and Liver Transplantation, Chennai.

The liver clinic was inaugurated by Dr. Mohammed A Nayeem, Senior Consultant and the Unit Head from the Apollo Institute for Liver Diseases and Liver Transplantation, Chennai. The liver clinic will be visited by the renowned surgeon on the last Friday and Saturday of every month.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Nayeem saidthere has been a steep rise in liver-related problems in recent years due to life style changes. A paradigm shift in the etiology of liver disease is being seen of late from hepatitis viruses to alcohol and fatty liver resulting from obesity and diabetes.

With better drugs for hepatitis B and C, they are likely to be eradicated in future. Unfortunately, the decline in liver disease due to viral hepatitis is being tempered by the rise in alcohol intake and the fatty liver disease due to obesity and diabetes.

Sadly, there has been not only a rise in alcohol intake (55% over the last 20 years), particularly among women, but also the average age when people start drinking has come down to 15.

Sedentary lifestyle, eating junk food, diabetes, fatty liver and alcohol intake, are some of the preventable causes of liver problems, he commented.

Dr Nayeem ,who along with his team has a vast experience of more than 1800 liver transplants with results on par with international standards, concluded that at Apollo centre Chennai are diligently working towards reducing the price of liver transplant without compromising the patient care.

The Apollo Hospital Chennai is a one-stop centre for paediatric as well as adult liver transplantation, including ABO-incompatible, dual lobe, combined liver-kidney and swap transplantation. This was stated in apress release.
