GUWAHATI, May 25: The results of High School Leaving Certificate Examination (HSLC), 2018 declared by the Board of Secondary Education, Assam (SEBA) on Friday threw up quite a few surprises with students from lesser known schools dominating the merit list, flood-ravaged Dhemaji topping the list of district-wise performance, and boys after several years of gap outshining girls in overall performance.

This year’s pass percentage was 8.1 per cent higher than last year’s percentage of 47.94 per cent. Out of 3,37,570 students who took the HSLC examination, 1,89,191 came out with flying colours, registering a pass percentage of 56.04 per cent. Out of the successful examinees, 60,987 secured first division followed by 81,853 and 46,351 securing second and third divisions respectively.

Students from lesser known schools from different parts of the State outsmarted their counterparts from the leading and elite schools by securing maximum number of ranks in the merit list. Raktim Bhuyan from Moonlit High School, Sonitpur, who topped this year’s HSLC results, said it does not matter to which school one goes to excel in academics. He said sincerity, hard work and will power to do well in studies can overcome all obstacles.

Abinash Kalita from Anundoram Borooah Academy High school, Barpeta and Preetpal Bezbaruah from Tihu High School, Nalbari, who jointly secured second position in the merit list, have echoed Raktim on the formula of academic excellence.

Out of 37 students who could secure first top ten ranks in order of merit, majority of them are from lesser known schools in the State. Barring Suderashan Public School and St Mary’s HS School of Guwahati, students from no other leading schools in the State could find themselves in the merit list.

State Education Minister Siddhartha Bhattacharyya, who addressed the media after the declaration of the HSLC results, said it is inspiring to see that Dhemaji, which always catches headlines for floods and erosion, has produced the highest number of successful examinees in this year’s results. The pass percentage in Dhemaji stood at 79.76 per cent. Many say that it is incredible to see as how students of Dhemaji, braving all natural calamities, could excel in the HSLC exams.

After a gap of several years, boys this time outshone girls in the HSLC exams results. While the pass percentage among boys was 59 per cent, 53.23 per cent girls could clear the exams. Out of 60,987 examinees who secured first division, 31,861 and 29,126 were boys and girls respectively.

On other hand, in the Assam High Madrassa (AHM) Examination, 2018, the results of which were declared simultaneously on Friday, the pass percentage is 50.62. Out of 9095 examinees who took the AHM exam, 4,604 came out with flying colours. Md Mizanur Rahman of Kamadanga High School, Dhubri has topped the AHM exam. Nazmul Huda of Chapar Madrassa HS School, Dhubri and Sabiha Sabnam of Pachim Mangaldoi High Madrassa, Darrang secured second and third ranks in the merit list respectively.
