Governor announces  Rs 10 lakh for Basistha ashram

GUWAHATI, May 26: As a part of sequel of measures that he has been taking since he has assumed his responsibilities, Assam Governor Prof. Jagdish Mukhi visited Basistha Ashram in the city on Saturday and took stock of its different facilities available for the devotees and announced to donate Rs 10 lakh from his discretionary fund for the development of the ashram.

Basistha Ashram is one of the oldest seats of religious and cultural tourism in the city which has been drawing devotees and tourists in huge numbers for decades. Prof. Mukhi said that since Basistha Ashram is one of the attractions for the tourists in Guwahati, it has become pertinent to upgrade its amenities. The Governor talked to the Temple Management Committee and Kamrup (M) Deputy Commissioner Virendra Mittal and asked him to prepare a broad roadmap to upgrade its tourist facilities.

The Temple Management Committee also apprised the Governor of various issues which needed urgent attention by the district administration. The Governor said that he would look into every possible measure to upgrade the facilities in and around the temple like providing with safe drinking water, maintenance of cleanliness in and around the temple campus, additional construction, security measures etc. It may be noted that after Umananda Temple where the Governor undertook similar activities, Governor Prof. Mukhi now vowed to facelift the Basistha Ashram to promote its global importance as one of the places of religious and cultural tourism.
