New data basket soon for suspected aliens

New data basket soon for suspected aliens

GUWAHATI, May 26: With the NRC update work entering its all-important final stage, the NRC authority is trying its best to improve data quality so as to bar the names of declared foreigners, absconding foreigners, D-voters, and people whose nationalities are sub-judice and their families from entering the citizens’ register that is going to be published on June 30.

Data improvement has been necessitated before the publication of the second and final draft NRC as the data of a section of foreigners are ill-defined such as the same name appearing for two or more persons without the names of their parents, ages, proper addresses etc against them. In order to make such vague data crystal clear, all deputy commissioners and superintendents of police in the State, besides the NRC authority, have been engaged in their works with full zeal. They are literally racing against time to get the job well accomplished before June 30.

Such an all-out attention is being given to data quality improvement after the detection of a declared Bangladeshi making it to the first part draft of NRC published recently.

Talking to The Sentinel, State NRC coordinator Prateek Hajela said: “We’ve laid tress on improvising data quality of foreigners. Such a step is being taken to bar the names of declared foreigners, absconding foreigners, doubtful voters, and people whose nationalities are sub-judice and their families from entering the NRC to be published. In order to make the NRC error-free, we’re keeping in touch with the Border Police.”

Even as the Assam Accord was signed way back in 1985, there has been no basket or data whatsoever to keep the names of declared foreigners, absconding foreigners, doubtful voters, and people whose nationalities are sub-judice and their families distinctly separated from Indian citizens in the State.

With a view to getting rid of such, it has been decided to develop a software to make a basket or data that can keep all these categories of people together quite distinctly from Indian citizens in the State. What is significant is that this basket has nothing to do with NRC update as it will continue to stay even after the NRC update exercise is over. This apart, this basket is going to be updated from time to time as the status regarding foreigners, doubtful voters, absconding foreigners, and people with cases to ascertain their nationalities and their dependents will keep changing with the disposal of cases against them by foreigners tribunals and courts, seizure by the Border Police etc. Lack of such a basket often lands the State government in troubled waters when it comes to matters related to foreigners.

Talking to The Sentinel on this issue, Hajela said: “We’re preparing a central portal for storing the names of declared foreigners, absconding foreigners, doubtful voters, and suspected foreigners with cases against them and their families in a separate basket. The basket or portal is being prepared with the coordination of the NRC authority, the Border Police, foreigners tribunals and the Election Commission. Even when the NRC update process is over, this data will stay. Moreover, this data has to be updated in sync with the changing statistics of these categories of people whose names and addresses are to be stored in it.”
