Abandoned newborn gaining strength

SHILLONG, May 28: Ganesh Das Hospital’s Medical Superintendent (MS) Dr N Wanswett said that the newborn baby, which was left abandoned in a village, has recovered and is gaining strength by the day. The baby is still under treatment at the hospital.

Last week a newborn baby was found wrapped in a bag by villagers at Mawkynrew village. Later, with the help of the villagers police were able to identify the mother who hails from Assam. Both the baby and the mother were taken to Ganesh Das Hospital for treatment.

Speaking to The Sentinel, Dr Wanswett said, “The baby is gaining strength by the day.”

When asked on the condition of the mother, who had abandoned the baby, Dr. Wanswett said that the mother is still under treatment.

Meanwhile, East Khasi Hills SP Davis N Marak, when asked if the police has been able to interrogate the mother on the reason behind abandoning her won baby, he said that till date the police is yet to interrogate the mother as she is still under treatment. “We have been preparing to arrest the mother once she is discharged from hospital,” he said.

The police has taken up a suo motto case in this connection and they have also registered a case under section 315 of the Indian Penal code (IPC). As per this law a person might face up to 10 years in prison.
