Three dead, eight injured in major road mishap

Kokrajhar, May 28: In a major road accident on NH-31(C) at Ramfalbil under Serfanguri police station in Kokrajhar district on Monday, two passengers died on the spot, one succumbed to his injuries at RN Brahma Civil Hospital while eight others, including the driver, were injured when a Tata Magic coming from Kokrajhar was hit by a gas tanker. Those who died on the spot were identified as Renuka Ray (50) of Nilibari, Chirang, and Kirodini Adhikari (65) of Deborgaon, Serfanguri. Aloka Basumatary (32) of Aflagaon under Serfanguri police station was declared dead in the hospital.

Among the eight injured, Mithun Basumatary (8), son of Aloka Basumatary, is stated to be critical as he received serious injuries on the head. The driver of the vehicle, Sameswar Goyary was admitted at MRM Hospital, Kokrajhar while seven others have been admitted at RN Brahma Civil Hospital. According to the passengers who survived the accident, the Tata Magic (AS 16 AC 0438) in which they were traveling from Kokrajhar, tried to cross the NH on the other side of the four-lane to reach the Serfanguri terminus which is on the right-hand side direction, when a gas tanker (NL 01L 7317) coming from the opposite direction in the correct side hit the vehicle.

Talking to this reporter, the president of Ramfalbil Amchalik ABSU, Swmdwn Basumatary said on many occasions the local passenger vehicles try to cross the NH in the wrong direction to enter the terminus at Serfanguri that lead to accidents. He said many people had lost their lives due to mistakes committed by drivers. He also said they had already discussed the matter but to streamline the traffic, the traffic police had to take stringent measures.
