Cabinet panel for trimming holidays

Cabinet panel for trimming holidays

GUWAHATI, May 30: The proverbial all holiday no work debate is back, prompting the BJP-led government at Dispur to form a Cabinet sub-committee to see if the office calendar of the State is heavily loaded with holidays and suggest measures to be taken for 2019, including trimming, if necessary.

Former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi was worried over the lack of work culture in the State, so is his successor Sarbananda Sonowal. However, Gogoi could do precious little to boost work culture in the State. However, running to counter to that the present dispensation at Dispur has taken some tangible steps to revive the moribund work culture in the State government offices. Some of the visible steps on this front taken by the BJP-led government in the State are changing the summer office hours from 9.30 am to 5 pm against 10 am to 5 pm earlier and winter office hours from 9.30 am to 5 pm against 10 am to 4.15 pm earlier. This, however, is a fact that a section of employees in the State government has not been strictly adhering to this timing.

The number of holidays in the Assam Government’s office calendar is one of the most debated issues in circles concerned since too much holidays have their telling blow on the work culture.

Stuck in such a debate, the Chief Minister has formed the Cabinet sub-committee with State Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma as its chairman and ministers Keshab Mahanta and Rihon Daimary as members. The committee is going to see if there are more holidays in the State Government’s office calendar or not and suggest measures to be taken for 2019.
