Shillong, May 31: Congress candidate Miani D Shira, the daughter of the Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma, won the recently held Amapati Constituency by-poll, defeating her nearest Nationalist People Party (NPP) candidate Clement Momin by 2,330 votes. Ampati constituency is a bastion of Mukul Sangma who gave up the Ampati seat to retain Songsak constituency after the recently held Meghalaya Assembly election. The election to Ampati seat was a ‘battle of pride’ between the Congress and non-Congress parties. Mukul Sangma, however, fielded his daughter for the Ampati by-poll.

The political battle for supremacy in Ampati reached its zenith as both the parties reached out to the nook and cranny of the constituency to campaign for their respective candidates.

Mukul Sangma and the Congress party have retained its own bastion for the sixth consecutive term.

Mukul Sangma could not be contacted over phone but his newly elected daughter Miani D Shira said, “I dedicate this victory to the people of Ampati. The victory is like triumphs over evil.”

The Congress was also upbeat after the by-election debacle in Williamnagar constituency. The victory has again made the Congress the single largest party in the 60-member Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.
