Awareness meeting against superstition

A Correspondent

Doomdooma, June 12: Ellora Vigyan Mancha (EVM) Doomdooma branch organized an awareness meeting against superstition at Line No.10 of nearby Hansara Tea Estate on Sunday with president Jhikananda Borgohain in the chair. Incidentally on August 15 last year, a couple of this labour line was brutally murdered by fellow tea-workers on suspicion of practising witchcraft. Following this, a series of awareness meetings were held by the district administration in association with Ellora Vigyan Mancha and the district administration sanctioned financial grants to EVM to organize more such meetings.

President Jhikananda Borgohain, working president and advocate Tarini Deka, vice-president and journalist Arjun Baruah, secretary and Associate Professor Dr Azibur Rahman, line chowkidar Debaru Tanti and other workers of the line also addressed the meeting and spoke about the various inconveniences and lack of facilities in the tea garden. The speakers laid importance on imparting proper education to the children of tea-workers and advised them to avail the medical facilities available instead of taking recourse to the village bez.

When the workers complained about non-availability of adequate healthcare facilities in the tea gardens, they were advised to go to the Doomdooma 30-bedded FRU or other government hospitals where free treatment is given to the poor and needy persons.
