Postmortem of the Dokmoka Incident

The brutal killing of the two promising youths of Guwahati at Dokmoka in Karbi Anglong district is condemnable and one and all want that exemplary punishment be imposed on them. It is heartening to note that police have nabbed 35 culprits so far who took part in killing the two innocent youths on the suspicion of being child abductors. Instigated by certain messages spread through social media, the perpetrators committed the crime.

Protest rallies have been organized across Assam condemning the heinous crime. All of us regret having lost Abhijeet and Nilotpal due to the mindlessness of certain hooligans.

But in the wake of the gruesome incident at Dokmoka, certain unscrupulous elements started showing their ugly faces. These elements under the influence of some invisible forces in a bid to communalize the issue are trying to destabilize Assam by taking law in their own hands and have allegedly started threatening the Karbi people staying in Nagaon, Hojai, and Jorhat asking them to leave the areas.

But due to the timely intervention and nabbing of some of those elements, their despicable efforts were foiled. Nevertheless the exodus of certain people from places cannot be ruled out. Now, the crux of the question is all those involved at Dokmoka should be nabbed and punished and simultaneously all those involved in the incident of threatening the innocent people of Karbi Anglong should also be meted out severe punishment. Any attempt of evil forces out to destabilize Assam must be nipped in the bud.

Banning Plastic Need of the Hour

World Environment Day this year underlined the need to create awareness against the use of plastic in all forms. The World Environment Day is observed on the fifth of June. There is definitely a need to reduce plastic pollution. With excessive use of plastic materials, it has now become a major environmental threat for us. Many countries of the world have been taking steps to ban the use of plastic and create awareness against the peril of plastic use. Several States have already taken laudable steps in this direction. Delhi, Sikkim, Chandigarh, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka have banned the use of plastic bags. The governments of Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu have also announced a blanket ban on plastic bags and bottles from March 2019. As such, I would like to request the Government of Assam also to ban the use of plastic bags, bottle etc. and to take forward the program of awareness amidst the people against the peril of plastic use.

Fourth Estate: Need for Introspection

A few days back, two youths were lynched to death in a most barbaric and inhuman way in Karbi Anglong.

Naturally enough, anguished people have protested and condemned this unfortunate act.

However, the role of the media is found wanting in reporting this incident.

Apparently, not many reporters and journalists visited the place where the condemnable incident took place. Thus, media reporting is restricted to what is available in the social media, and people's reactions in Guwahati and some other places.

This is unfortunate. We expect journalists to actually report from the ground so that a more balanced view is provided, instead of creating media frenzy over an unfortunate incident.

A Bhuyan,

Nagaon.
