Question mark hangs over NRC publication date

90 seva kendras deluged in Barak Valley; NRC State Coordinator expresses concern

Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, June 18: The NRC update work – in full swing until five days back – has slackened, especially in the Barak Valley districts, due to the floods in rampage across the State. With this, a question mark hangs over the publication of the complete draft NRC on June 30.

NRC work has been affected the worst in the Barak Valley districts where as many as 90 NRC seva kendras have been hit by flood waters. Some of the NRC seva kendras have been shifted to other places. Entire June is very crucial for the NRC update work – the exercise was gaining momentum every other day with the date for publication of complete draft NRC, June 30, approaching closer. However, incessant rains in the recent past, leading to floods in the State, have slowed down the pace, especially in the Barak Valley. The valley seems to need more time for restoration of normalcy.

When asked on the issue, State NRC coordinator Prateek Hajela said: “The remaining days of June are very crucial for us to meet the deadline set by the Supreme Court of India. We were going on the right track, but the sudden deluge in the State has slowed down our pace. When floods have already affected our work for the last five days, it is something to be considered. The situation is very critical in the Barak Valley where officials engaged in the NRC work are now engaged in rescue-and-relief operation.”

When asked if he is going to inform the Supreme Court of the floods affecting the NRC work here, Hajela said: “We do keep the apex court informed of everything related to NRC. We’ve to inform the SC of floods too.”

When asked if the NRC authority is going to seek more time from the Supreme Court for the publication of complete draft NRC because of floods, Hajela remarked: “Let’s see.”

Apart from the Barak Valley, floods have also affected NRC works in Hojai and Karbi Anglong districts.
