Dibrugarh, June 19: As part of the ongoing efforts to check the production and sale of illicit liquor by helping the people involved find better sources of income, the District Administration, in association with the Excise Department, held an awareness meeting on Tuesday at the DC office.

Speaking at the meet which was attended by 53 traders dealing in illicit liquor, DC Laya Madduri, said that the district administration had taken many steps in the direction of curbing the menace of illicit liquor in the past one year. She added that the Excise Department had already identified 800 such families, and was in the process of finding dignified alternatives for them. In that regard, around 100 families had already been given training on ventures like poultry farming and piggery. Also, such traders were assisted in availing bank loans for setting up their new ventures, Madduri informed.

Appealing the gathering to discard practices that could bring ruin to their families and the society, she urged the participants to consider other ways to earn income. Accordingly, the district administration would make arrangements to provide training to them in their venture of choice, she assured. Madduri, however, warned that if any person, even after availing such training, resorted to their old ways, they would be punished under the Amended Excise Act.

The other dignitaries to grace the meeting included the Superintendent of Excise Department, Ajay Bayan; Assistant Professor of the Psychiatric Department of Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH), Dr. Dhrubajyoti Bhuyan; general secretary of Assam Chah Mazdoor Sangha, Dibrugarh, Nabin Keot and office-bearers of several other departments.
