International Chess in Guwahati from July 8

GUWAHATI, June 19: The 2nd International FIDE Rating Chess Tournament will start in Guwahati from July 8. The championship, to be organized by the Chess Players Parents Forum, will be held at the Deshbhakta Tarun Ram Phukan Indoor Stadium.

Disclosing the news to the media the general secretary of the organizing committee Lachit Barman today said that the tournament was grand success in the last year and this time too the local players would be highly benefitted from it. This year the tournament carries total cash awards of Rs 3 Lakh.

The champion will earn cash award of Rs 50,000 while the second and third position holders will collect a purse of Rs 30,000 and 20,000 respectively. Cash award will be given to the top 30 players of the competition. Apart from that there would be several other awards which will be given to first four position winners in different age categories. Asit Baran Choudhury is named as the chief Arbiter of the tournament and he would be assisted by Arun Singh.

Regarding the participation of the players Barman said,” Already Grandmaster Diptayan Ghosh from West Bengal and International Master R Bala Subramanium of Tamil Nadu confirmed their participation. We are expecting some more top players of the country in this meet.”

Among others present in the media briefing were M Arun Singh, President North East Chess Forum, Pranab Kumar Nath, Joint Secretary, Guwahati Chess Association and Devajit Sarma, Vice President, Guwahati Chess Association.
