Dilapidated condition of East-West corridor section of NH-54 E irks people

Haflong, June 22: The dilapidated condition of the Jatinga – Harangajao portion of NH 54 E, also known as the East-West corridor, due to the indifferent attitude of the NHAI, coupled with the recent landslides have caused serious concern among the people of Harangajao constituency of NC Hills Autonomous Council. The East-West corridor, the dream project of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, was started in the year 1996 and major portion of the road is about to be completed. But the portion from Jatinga to Harangajao even after a decade could not be completed for reasons best known to the NHAI. The portion was awarded to a company named JKM (JV) and the company executed some work but left the project incomplete following some dispute with the NHAI and approached the High Court. The NHAI reportedly terminated the contract with JKM and floated some tenders.

People are of the opinion that the NHAI, in connivance with the companies, has been ignoring people’s sufferings and executing the works as per the whims of the contractors. The people also alleged that though it was suggested to maintain the road before the onslaught of the monsoon season, the NHAI had ignored this suggestion, perhaps to hush-up their wrong doings with the excuse that the rains had washed away the maintenance work.
