Shillong, June 22: The Congress which was the single largest party has lost the status after senior leader and Ranikor legislator Martin M Danggo resigned as member of the House late on Thursday evening.

The resignation of Danggo has again reduced the number of Congress MLAs in the 60-member Assembly from 21 to 20 members.

Danggo is set to join the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) which now has 20 MLAs in the Assembly.

The election to the 60-member Meghalaya Assembly was held in February this year.

It may be mentioned that on Thursday afternoon the news spread that Danggo would submit his resignation at 5 pm.

When media persons went to the Assembly Secretariat, the Ranikor legislator did not turn up. Even, Assembly Deputy Speaker, Timothy D Shira kept waiting for him to receive his resignation for nearly an hour but he never came. However, later in the evening at around 9 pm, Danggo submitted his resignation thereby ended all speculations.

Danggo, a five-time Congress MLA from Ranikor in South West Khasi Hills district, first won in 1998 on a People’s Democratic Movement ticket.

Danggo purportedly quit the Congress and decided to join the NPP after the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government accepted the long-pending demand to upgrade Ranikor to a civil sub-division.

The MDA comprises 20 MLAs of NPP, 7 of United Democratic Party (UDP), four of newly-formed Peoples Democratic Front (PDF), and two each of BJP and Hill State Peoples Democratic Party (HSPDP).

The NCP, with one MLA, and two independents are also supporting the government.

Meanwhile, Danggo also resigned from the primary membership of the Congress party. The resignation letter was submitted to party working president James Lyngdoh.

“As per the desire of my people, I have tendered my resignation as MLA with effect from June 21, 2018,” Danggo said in his letter addressed to Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee president, Celestine Lyngdoh.

“Therefore, with deep sorrow and regret in my heart, I am also resigning from the primary membership of Congress along with all positions that I am holding in the party with effect from June 21,” Danggo said.
