State not fully prepared to face monsoon fury

Shillong, June 22: With the having already made its advent to the North-east, the big question that arises is as to how prepared Meghalaya is to confront the problem of flood as witnessed in the plain belts of Garo Hills last year. The district administration and the disaster management team did act in a laudable way in spite of the logistics constraints.

This time around, the MET forecast that the monsoon rains will wreak its own routine gesture. As evident, Assam has already experienced the same in the past week. On this issue, The Sentinel spoke to the State Minister in-charge of the department of Disaster Mangagement, Kyrmen Shylla. He said, “In terms of logistics and man power, there is still an issue of constraints but enough to react to a calamity like situation.”

Asked on the preventive steps of the government to react on the unforeseen calamities during the monsoon, Shylla said, “ All our officers are working hard, prepared for the unforeseen situatation and orientated the people in the vulnerable areas.” “Technically, we are little far behind in terms of predictions, but the MET office has always been advisories”, the Minister stated, even as he added that extra measures will be put in place to ensure public safety and accommodation during such disasters.
