Mawsynram residents demand civil sub-division

SHILLONG, June 24: The assurance made by the Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma to upgrade the Ranikor Administrative Unit to a full-fledged Civil sub division under South West Khasi Hills District, has prompted the residents of Mawsynram to demand the same, that is to upgrade the present Mawsynram C&RD Block to a civil sub-division.

With that aim to strength their demand the residents on Saturday constituted the Mawsynram Civil Sub Division Demand Committee, in a meeting held at Mawsynram village. The Committee is tasked with following up on the issue and pressure the state government to realize the demand of a civil sub division.

The committee will be headed by local MLA of Mawsynram constituency Himalaya Muktan Shangpliang as the chairman and Bhalang Kharbani as the secretary. Speaking to reporters, after the meeting HM Shangpliang said that the demand for Mawsynram civil sub division has been on since the past 20 years. However, till date nothing has materlized and this committee will follow the issue closely till it is realized.

He said the present Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government has stated that it’s a people’s government hence it should listen to the demands made by the residents of Mawsynram by not putting up any conditions because the region is equipped with various government offices and other criteria which is needed to be upgraded into a civil sub division.
