Silchar, the Second Largest City of Assam: Know All About the City

The city Silchar is located in the southern region of Assam and in the Northeastern parts of India. It is the second-largest city of Assam surrounded by the Barak River or Surma River which is partly in two countries along with northeastern India and eastern Bangladesh. The Barak comes from the hills of Manipur and then flows towards the southwest of the state of Manipur from where it breaks and flows in the west part of Silchar town. The Silchar city is said to be founded by Captain Thomas Fisher in the year 1832.

Silchar is the second largest city of Assam after Guwahati and it is headquarter of the district of Cachar since British rule. Earlier during the reign of Kacharis the city, Silchar was a small village where missionary schools were built at the time of the 19th century. The origin of the term Silchar comes from a combination of two words 'shil' and 'char' in which 'shil' means rocks and 'char' means fields. During the British rule, many shrines were constructed in the Silchar town including the Narsing Akhara shrine of the mid 19th century.

Silchar is known for its trading market and infrastructure along with agriculture as it is the hub of rice, tea and various agricultural items. Manufacturing industries include mainly the paper industry and tea manufacturing. The crowded city is an attraction for tourists because of its enthralling natural beauty providing the sight of River Barak along with its diverse cultural values.

Silchar is known for educational institutions of the state as it holds one of the 31 NITs of India named National Institute of Technology Silchar which was formed in 1967. National Institute of Technology Silchar is also the Regional College for Engineering in Silchar. The prestigious institute was set up by MHRD as national importance and declared as the 9th best NITs. The institute provides high rankings and better placements for the students.

The Central Government University called Assam University is situated in Silchar which provides different courses. The Assam University was founded as per the provisions of an act that is enacted by the Parliament of India in 1994. The principle visitor of the Assam University is the President of India and the headmaster of the university is the Governor of Assam. The reputed University has sixteen schools under it in different areas of lower Assam.

SILCHAR AIRPORT

The Silchar city holds an airport which is a civil enclave airport run by the Indian Air Force located at Kambhirgram about 29 kilometres distance from the main town of Silchar. The Silchar Airport lies on the highways and railways and connects Aizawl of Mizoram joining Shillong. The Airport in the year 1944 was constructed as a station of Rapid Action Force by the British but alter it was given to the Royal Indian Air Force.

Silchar provides quite pleasant weather and it has a borderline tropical monsoon climate. It has hot weather even during the winter season as the weather is mostly hot and humid. In the month of October, thunderstorms are common in the place.
