GUWAHATI: A special judicial magistrate has sent Mithu Agarwal for five-day police following his arrest a few days back on Saturday. He is the prime accused in the recently detected Rs 20-crore scam in Guwahati Municipal Corporation's drainage de-siltation project during the period from April 2 to May 26 this year in Guwahati

Aged 39 years, Mithu Agarwal was absconding after the case was registered in the month of August. He was arrested by the chief minister's special vigilance cell on the night of Saturday from Bihar. He is being named as the mastermind of the scam and said to have siphoned a huge amount of money himself out of the project.

Vigilance cell SP Rosie Kalita mentioned that Mithu Agarwal originally hails from the Sivasagar district of Assam. But he moved to and settled in the Kundil Nagar area of the Beltola region in Guwahati. Mithu Agarwal was a contractor and a partner in the firm named Dinsan Global Venture which was involved in the major scam. Including his partner in the firm, Dinesh Jaiswal, a total of fourteen people have been arrested by the vigilance cell.

Following the registration of the case against Mithu Agarwal, the police department carried out a search operation at his home in Guwahati and a large number of objectable documents and fake seals were recovered from his residence. And this led to the issue of a lookout notice for the absconding Mithu Agarwal. He was finally arrested by a police team based on a tip from Bihar.

The de-siltation project is a major part of the Guwahati Smart City project. It involves clearing the existing drainage routes of the city from any silt and solid garbage that enters the system from different sources. Solid garbage jamming the city's drainage is the main cause of the urban flooding problems in Guwahati, especially during the monsoons.
