South-East Asian Cultural Confluence 2022 held at Dispur College

GUWAHATI: With a view to promoting Culture and Tourism, Dispur College organized a South-East Asian Cultural Confluence 2022 at the college auditorium on Sunday.

Principal of Dispur College Dr Navajyoti Borah said in his welcome address that the confluence is celebrating the close cultural ties between the North-East region of India and South-East Asian countries, thereby opening ways for upcoming opportunities.

A 'Bulletin' was inaugurated by the foreign guests, which has been edited by the Head of the Department of English, Dr Sanjib Kumar Sarma. In his address, Dr Sarma gave a brief introduction of all the panelists from Thailand, Laos, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal and Vietnam and opined that showcasing of the rich cultural heritage will boost bilateral relations between the nations which share close cultural ties interfacing the cuisine, arts, crafts.

Professor Korin Khomrick, the Dean of the Department of Music, Mahasarakhom University of Thailand, enlightened the crowd with Thai Folk Dance with ten faculties from different universities of Thailand. A live demonstration of different musical instruments was performed by Professor of Naresuon University of Thailand, Dr Walanachoi Monying with her group using 'elong' - an instrument like a drum - and other folk instruments. The external affairs director of Laos PDR, Vonemany led a Lao traditional dance by young artistes Phaithong and Thitlakone which is a joyful dance performed on occasions like marriage and other auspicious events.

Professor Hem Adhikari with seven number artistes from Nepal performed 'Mayoni'- a traditional dance form of Nepal. The Indian Classical dance form 'Bhortaal', 'Bareboroniya' and Assamese folk dance 'Bihu' were performed by the students of Dispur College to showcase the feeling of rich cultural heritage of Assam and North-East India as a whole. Folk artiste Jina Rajkumari introduced the organizers of the event and Dr Khagen Sarma, assistant professor of Department of MIL of Gauhati University, drama director Rabijita Gogoi, poet Swapnali Bargohain, research officer of Tribal Research Centre of the State Government Dr Asim Bora, Dr Atul Bharali were felicitated by the Principal of Dispur College and Coordinator of the programme Dr Sashi Mohan Das.

The event ended with a joyous Bihu dance where all delegates from Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Nepal and other South-East Asian countries together performed steps of Bihu, the vibrating folk dance of Assam. The confluence was anchored by guest lecturer of Dispur College Bagmita Barthakur, stated a press release.
