BBC features Assam's elephant doctor Padma Shri Kushal Konwar Sarma

State's renowned veterinarian, also known as the Elephant Doctor in Assam, Padma Shri Kushal Konwar Sarma has been recently featured on BBC. The news report titled 'The Indian taking care of thousands of elephants' said that Dr Sarma has spent 35 years of his life caring and saving the lives of thousands of elephants in the forests of India and Indonesia.

Dr Sarma has worked for ten years without a weekend off. He has treated more than 10000 elephants both captive and wild. He is widely known for his amazing service in taming rogue wild elephants. Dr Sarma has tamed about 200 rogue bull elephants during the last three decades.

The report by BBC quoted Dr Sarma saying, "I am the happiest when I am around elephants." He told BBC that he has spent more time with the elephants than his family.

The first elephant he treated was in the year 1984, under the guidance of his mentor, Professor Subhash Chandra Pathak.

Dr Sarma, who is also the Professor of Surgery and Radiology at the College of Veterinary Science in Guwahati, Assam was conferred Padma Shri in the field of medicine for his contribution in wildlife treatment and Asian Elephant Conservation.
