LAKHIMPUR: "The observation of the death anniversary of public leader Bhimbor Deori should not be confirmed to the people of the Deori community only, it should be observed by all communities of Assam as well as the Northeast region to pay him rich tribute and to keep his ideology alive," said Bimal Borah, Minister for Cultural Affairs, in Dhemaji on Wednesday.

He said so while attending the 75th Bhimbor Deori Divas organized under the aegis of the Directorate of Cultural Affairs in association with Dhemaji district administration, All Assam Deuri Students' Union, other Deori community organizations and the Deori Autonomous Council at Sripani HS School premises.

Taking part in the event as chief guest, Bimal Borah further said, "Bhimbor Deori was one of those public leaders who awakened the community. He will be remembered always for his tremendous contribution to awakening the community as well as the tribal people of the entire Northeast region." He appealed to the people of the Deori community to create an environment with unique endeavours to mould more public leaders like Bhimbor Deori.

Notably, Bhimbor Deori, who breathed his last on November 30 in 1947, was a devoted freedom fighter and a noted lawyer. He was one of the main architects of the 'Khasi Darbar Hall Resolutions' created on March 21–23, 1945.

Earlier in the event, Deputy Commissioner of Dhemaji, Asim Kumar Bhattacharya delivered the welcome address. He thanked the Government of Assam for observing the 75th death anniversary of Bhimbor Deori in Dhemaji. In his lecture, Bhattacharya said that the Assamese community as well as the tribal people of the greater Assam would have been more benefitted if Bhimbor Deori had not breathed his last at an early age.

The event was inaugurated by Niren Deori, the former president of the Deori Sahitya Sabha. Jonai MLA Bhuban Pegu attended the event as special guest. On the other hand, Jyotirekha Hazarika, Professor of JB College, Jorhat, graced the occasion as appointed speaker.
