Guwahati: Assam finance and health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today stated that the Union Home Minister Amit Shah is committed to resolving the long-drawn-out problem of insurgency in the Northeast Indian states of Assam and Nagaland.

As per Sarma, Home Minister Amit Shah is "very keen" to resolve the long-running insurgencies in Nagaland and Assam. "The Home Minister is very keen to resolve the Nagaland issue during his tenure. If possible, the ULFA issue should also be resolved. And primarily, the Assam-Nagaland border issue, Assam-Arunachal border dispute, Assam-Meghalaya border dispute, and Assam-Mizoram border dispute should also be resolved", said Sarma.

The Assam minister said that Shah, despite being infected with the coronavirus, is still keeping tabs on the issues of the Northeast Indian states. Sarma, it may be recalled, had posted a cryptic tweet in which he stated that Shah had inquired about the Northeast despite being hospitalized. However, he did not specify which issues had been discussed.

"Yesterday I received a call from Hon HM Sri @AmitShah to discuss issues pertaining to enduring peace in #NorthEast. Despite being in hospital his commitment to work is unwavering. This sets a benchmark for us all. India is proud to have you as Home Minister Sir. Admiration!", he wrote on Twitter.

Sarma said that the resolving of cross-border trafficking of drugs prevalent in the Northeastern states must also be resolved at the earliest.

"The Central Government is focusing on solving all the issues confronting the Northeast. Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister, we have resolved the Bru issue in Tripura, then we have resolved the Bodo issue in Assam, then we have resolved the ILP issues in Manipur and Mizoram", he further added.
