Assam: DU Ragging Incident Accused Kalyan Dutta Surrenders, Arrested

GUWAHATI: Even as the Dibrugarh University ragging continues to make waves across the state, one of the prime accused Kalyan Dutta surrendered before the police in Dibrugarh and he was arrested.

Kalyan is named as one of the absconding students accused in the sensational incident that lead to the injury of the student named Anand Sharma. Anand underwent a complicated spinal injury on Friday, which went off successfully and is now recuperating in the private hospital in Dinrugarh where he has been undergoing treatment.

Kalyan Dutta is reported to have gone live on Facebook on Friday to claim his innocence in the entire ragging episode, saying in the live video post, "I give my word, I will turn myself in but before that request you all to find proof against me if I have done anything wrong."

Earlier, taking to his social media handle, he is reported to have said, "As Bhagawan Ramchandra went on exile (vanabaas) as per his father's wishes I too am not living in the comforts of a home with family. This is like vanabaas for me."

On his surrender before the police on Saturday, he was arrested and taken for medical examination before being produced in court.

Dibrugarh police have arrested five accused in connection with the Dibrugarh University ragging incident and the University has suspended 4 students till now.

Earlier on November 30, the police arrested Subhrojyoti Baruah, 3rd Semester student of Political Science.

However, the main accused Rahul Chetri continues to elude the clutches of the law.

Dibrugarh SP Shwetank Mishra told the media on Saturday, "We have arrested Kalyan Dutta, one of the accused in the Dibrugarh University ragging incident. Search is on for Arjun Chetri, another accused.. The investigation is progressing well. Anybody whose name comes up in the investigation, will be dealt with in accordance with the law. We have already questioned several students. Charge sheets will be filed against those arrested."

Regarding the influence of former students staying in hostels on ragging episodes, "Ex- students who live in the hostels ruin the atmosphere there and they give rise to ragging. Orders have already been issued that ex students will no longer be allowed to stay in the hostels and we will assist the university administration in enforcing the order".

Meanwhile, The Dibrugarh University Anti-Ragging Committee has held several hearings in connection to Anand Sarma's ragging case wherein the accused students gave statements to the committee.
