Former Chaygaon MLA Rana Goswami dies of COVID-19 at the Age of 80

The former MLA was detected with the virus yesterday itself and died at his Uzan Bazar residence. He left behind his wife, son, and daughter-in-law with his grandchildren

Guwahati: Rana Goswami, former MLA of Chaygaon, has died on Monday morning due to COVID-19 at the age of 80.

Sources said that he was detected with the virus yesterday and died at his Uzan Bazar residence. He left behind his wife, son, and daughter-in-law with his grandchildren.

Former Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal condolenced the death of Rana Goswami, former MLA of Chaygaon constituency and Guwahati Sports Association member. "I convey my sincere condolences to the bereaved family members," Sonowal wrote on a Facebook post.

Assam Health Minister Keshab Mahanta expressed grief at the demise of Rana Goswami.

He tweeted, "Deeply mourn the demise of former #Chaygaon MLA & sports activist Rana Goswami. My condolences and prayers to the bereaved family members. May his soul find eternal peace."

Goswami was also the vice president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and president and secretary of the Guwahati Sports Association.

The former MLA won Assam elections from the Chaygaon constituency in 2001 from Indian National Congress. He also contested from Chaygaon constituency in 1991 but he loses as an Independent candidate.

Meanwhile, 328629 people are affected so far in Assam. 281726 out of 328629 have recovered with 2179 deaths. 43377 patients are still in hospital and recovering.
