MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi Quits Assam Congress, Likely to Join BJP

GUWAHATI: If speculations are believed to be true, Congress MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi could be moving to the opposing Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) camp in a couple of days.

According to reports, the Mariani MLA is in Guwahati to complete the final formalities before the switch.

He has also resigned from his membership in the Assam Legislative Assembly. Kurmi tendered his resignation letter to Assam Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary.

I'm leaving Congress as High Command in Delhi & Guwahati leaders give priority to elderly leaders only. We'd told them Congress has good chance of coming to power this time & we shouldn't forge alliance with AIUDF as it would be a mistake. It indeed was: Assam MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi.

It is being speculated that Kurmi could announce his resignation once he reaches Guwahati.

Kurmi, who belongs to the tea tribe community and represents their interests in the Assembly, could hold the key to the BJP conquering the entirety of the Upper Assam.

Notably even before Assam Assembly Election 2021, he was rumored to join the BJP party.
