JORHAT: The Jorhat District Health Society organized the National TB Elimination programme on Monday at Jorhat Medical College and Hospital in which 10 TB Champions from different parts of the country participated.

They won their battle against tuberculosis, often considered by many as a dangerous and non-curable disease and are working to make the country tuberculosis-free. Addressing the meeting, Dr. Bhaktimoy Bhattacharya, District T B Officer said, "We aim to actively engage in the mission of tuberculosis elimination, and pledge to sensitize our community against stigma and other social barriers."

"The tuberculosis champions can be important for the programme. Interpersonal communication through such workers is the most effective form of mass communication that will encourage the vulnerable community to avoid tuberculosis and go for free-of-cost treatment facility available in government hospitals," said Dr. UdayadityaRajkonwar, District T B officer of Sivasagar.

"Who can understand tuberculosis better than us? It is our duty to motivate and inspire others affected by tuberculosis through our stories and experiences. We want to convey that treatment is available for tuberculosis," said MeeraJadav (31), a TB champion from Mumbai.

Addressing the meeting, Kamakhya Prasad Tasa said, "We hope this is the first stage of a long and fruitful partnership between the TB programme and TB Champions in Assam. TB Champions are integral to our efforts to achieve a TB-free India and TB-free Assam."

TB champion MinatiNayakPuran (36) of Nakachari in Jorhat ,PoojaJadav (23) from Mumbai, Sheet Kumar (36) from Jharkhand and Sajid Ahmed (24) from Uttar Pradesh shared their experience in the meeting.

Local TB champion of Jorhat, Rita Devi, Dipen Bora, Umakanta Bora, Deepankar Kumar Gogoi and JogeswarNarah also participated in the meeting.
