Surgical Skill Lab Inaugurated at Dr. B Borooah Cancer Institute

GUWAHATI: A Surgical Skill Lab, with support from Johnson & Johnson Institute, was inaugurated at Dr. B Borooah Cancer Institute (BBCI), Guwahati by its director Dr. Amal Chandra Kataki on 6th December 2022. The Surgical Skill Lab has five laparoscopic work stations for simulation-based training in minimally invasive surgeries.

According to Dr. Abhijit Talukdar, Professor of Surgical Oncology at BBCI, simulation is considered to be a paradigm shift in surgical education and skills acquisition. Surgical Skill Lab provides advanced technology and instruction to medical students and residents in a realistic learning environment. The Surgical Skills Lab is open to resident and postgraduate trainee doctors of BBCI 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for independent practice, further stated Dr.Talukdar.

This Surgical Skill Lab will provide opportunities to surgeons of the North Eastern region of the country to acquire lab based skills before performing laparoscopic surgery in real-life settings, stated Dr.Kataki

Earlier, the two-day 3rd Annual North East (NE) Evidence Based Medicine (EBM) Conference in Oncology concluded at Dr. B Borooah Cancer Institute (BBCI), Guwahati on 3rd December 2022.The theme for this year's EBM conference were Gynaecological Cancers and Gynaec Oncopathology.

The esteemed national faculties for the conference were Dr. Rajendra A. Badwe, Director of Tata Memorial Center, Dr. Amita Maheshwari, Dr. Jaya Ghosh, Dr. Kedar Deodhar, Dr. Supriya Chopra, Dr.Sharmila Pimple and Dr. Palak Popat, all from the Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai, Dr. Seema Singhal, from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, Dr. Shalini Rajaram, AIIMS , Rishikesh, and Dr. Bhagyalaxmi Nayak from Acharya Harihar Post Graduate Institute of Cancer, Cuttack.

Dr. Stephanie M. De Boer of Leiden University, the Netherlands was the international faculty for the EBM conference. A total of 42 doctors and cancer researchers attended the conference.

According to Dr. Amal Chandra Kataki, Director of BBCI, northeast India has a higher cancer incidence rate compared to the rest of India. Papumpare district of Arunachal Pradesh has the highest cervical cancer incidence in the country. Likewise, Kamrup Urban has the highest incidence of ovarian cancer in India. So, keeping up with the never-ending pursuit of achieving excellence in the sphere of cancer care, this year's EBM will open a wide opportunity to "raise the bar" of knowledge for oncologists of the region.

With the recent advancement in the laboratory technologies, addressing Gynaec-Oncopathology as a separate entity within the speciality of pathology will add to our knowledge of pathogenesis and for a directed therapy of this group of cancers, further informed Dr.Kataki.
