GUWAHATI: Thowra MLA Sushanta Borgohain resigned from Congress on Friday. Borgohain has submitted his resignation letter to the party President Bhupen Borah.

Sushanta Borgohain is likely to resign from the MLA post on Saturday. He will join BJP on August 1, said party President Bhabesh Kalita.

Earlier, a press meet was organized in Demow Rajiv Bhavan on Wednesday evening where newly-appointed working president of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) Rana Goswami was present.

Rana Goswami said that till now Sushanta Borgohain was a Congress MLA and the Congress leadership had not heard from Sushanta Borgohain about joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). After the press meet, on the advice of new APCC president Bhupen Borah, Rana Goswami went to the residence of Thowra MLA Sushanta Borgohain and had a discussion with him.

After the discussion, Rana Goswami told media persons here on Wednesday evening that Sushanta Borgohain had decided to join the BJP. Rana Goswami said that he had informed Bhupen Borah about it and the APCC president was in talks with the party high command in New Delhi and within 24 hours, a show-cause notice would be issued to Thowra MLA Sushanta Borgohain.

Meanwhile, in June 2021, former Mariani MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Notably, Kurmi tendered his resignation letter to Assam Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimari on Friday and resigned from the Congress too. After his resignation, Kurmi spewed venom against State Congress president Ripun Bora, senior leader Rockyibul Hussain and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, alleging their inefficient leadership for the ill-fate of Congress in the consecutive elections in the State and across the nation.

Kurmi joined BJP in a formal programme held at the NHPC Guest House located at Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project site at Gerukamukh under Dhemaji district in the presence of Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma. The Chief Minister accorded him a warm welcome to BJP.
