Silchar: The festival of Maha Shiva Ratri was celebrated with great fervour across Cachar District on Tuesday. Like yesteryears, devotees from all round the district and across Barak Valley thronged the holy Bhubhan Hills to offer prayers to Lord Siva and seek blessings. In order to make the festival incident and crime free, Cachar district administration had taken stringent measures. A committee was formed to monitor the proceedings of the festival at the Bhuvan Hills and special steps were taken to check consumption of alcohol and strict vigil was maintained to detect persons carrying alcohol while making the pilgrimage at the hilltop. Adequate police protection was also ensured. No casualties were reported during the festival.
However, a 50 year old person who had reportedly fallen sick had been attended and accorded with proper medical treatment. He was returning from the Bhuvan hills via Krishnapur road. Medical camps, PHE toilets and purification of the pond on the hilltop were arranged. SDRF teams were deployed to assist the people and combat any untoward incident. Deputy Commissioner of Cachar Laya Madduri visited the Bhuvan Hills on Tuesday and offered prayers as well. During her visit she interacted with the locals and also with the members of the temple committee and inquired about the implementation of the measures and also took stock of the steps to ensure safety and security of the devotees.
The Deputy Commissioner also learnt about the ways in which the festival was conducted in the previous years. She assured the locals that steps will be taken to improve the road conditions across the 16 kms, up and down, and other issues affecting the smooth running of the festival would be addressed in the coming days. Along with the Deputy Commissioner, ADC Ranadeep Dam, Assistant Commissioner Lakhipur Wadiul Islam, former ADC BC Nath also visited the hills. Meanwhile, the Riang community residing in Riang Punji on the hills falling under Dholai constituency have urged upon the Deputy Commissioner to shift the names from the voter’s list of Lakhipur to Dholai voter’s list to which the Deputy Commissioner has responded with priority and asked the concerned official to look into the matter.
