SHILLONG: Medhavi Skills University (MSU) and the North East Cane and Bamboo Development Council (NECBDC), under the aegis of the North Eastern Council (NEC), Government of India, announced a strategic collaboration that will accelerate innovation and entrepreneurship in the bamboo industry in Northeast India.
This collaboration shall employ MSU's experience with skill-based education and the NECBDC's capability to develop bamboo and cane for sustainable growth with economic opportunities for the youth of the region to answer the changing nature of the economy's skill demand in a more environmentally friendly way.
Some of the major initiatives that would be pursued under this partnership include incubation centers, where bamboo-based start-ups will be supported with infrastructure, mentorship, and funding.
It will also focus on the research and development of sustainable harvesting of bamboo and market it as an eco-friendly product. Specialized Centers of Excellence will be established to train people in bamboo crafts, technology, and value-added products for national capacity building and increasing employability.
“This partnership focuses on vocational training in cane and bamboo technologies, integrating practical skills with formal education. It aims to empower local communities and support sustainable economic growth in the Northeast,” MSU Co-Founder and Pro-Chancellor Mr. Kuldip Sarma said.
NECBDC Managing Director Mr M.C. Omi Niingshen pointed out: “Our joint efforts will unlock the immense potential of the region’s natural resources, creating sustainable pathways for economic empowerment and innovation in the cane and bamboo sector.”
This partnership is a landmark in the rejuvenation of the bamboo industry while supporting the sustainable development of Northeast India.
