GUWAHATI: The last date for Aadhaar seeding (linking) of ration cards was June 30. The Aadhaar seeding of ration cards has not been 'satisfactory' in the hill areas and tea garden areas. The Directorate of Food and Civil Supplies has sought more time from the government to complete the Aadhaar seeding of ration cards in these areas.

As per the guidelines of the Central Government, beneficiaries must seed (link) their ration cards with Aadhaar cards or they may stop receiving food grains. In the hill areas and tea garden areas it has been observed that due to a lack of proper awareness among the people regarding the importance of Aadhaar enrolment as well as its linkage with the ration cards, Aadhaar seeding of ration cards has been poor.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has instructed all Deputy Commissioners concerned to hold special Aadhaar enrolment camps in tea garden areas and hill areas. According to the Directorate of Food and Civil Supplies, Assam has around 58 lakh ration cards and 2.25 crore beneficiaries. So far, 93 per cent of Aadhaar seeding of ration cards has been done while 72 per cent of Aadhaar seeding of beneficiaries has been completed.
