GUWAHATI: The Cabinet took a slew of decisions on education in tea garden areas, self-employment, and women’s entrepreneurship today.

Speaking to the media, ministers Jayanta Mallabaruah and Ranoj Pegu said that the cabinet decided to create more posts in the 422 schools run by tea estate managements and their provincialization.

Pegu said, “The services of the existing teachers in tea garden management-run schools will remain intact, and the government will create 819 additional posts of teachers to maintain the teacher-student ratio. Despite being run by tea garden management, such schools will get government facilities like a midday meal, free uniforms, free textbooks, etc. The government will spend Rs 33 crore for that annually.”

Jayata Mallabaruah said, “The Cabinet allotted Rs 1,000 crore for the Mukhya Mantri Swa-Niyojan Yojana. One lakh youths will get Rs 2 lakh each as seed money to start their own businesses, and another one lakh youths will get self-employment opportunities. The Cabinet also allocated Rs 1,000 crore for the individual entrepreneurship of women who are members of self-help groups (SHGs). Each of these women will get Rs 1,000 to prepare the project report and Rs 10,000 after the project’s approval.”

Mallabaruah said, “The Cabinet authorized the deputy commissioners to allot land up to five lessas to the poor and landless urban people to allow them to erect dwelling houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana. Each of these poor landless people will have to pay just Rs 500 for the land. The Cabinet simplified the land allotment process today as the process was very lengthy.”

Mallabaruah further said, “The Cabinet decided the State Government should deposit Rs 50 crore in the Assam Infrastructure Financing Authority (AIFA) every month as sinking funds to help the government repay loans.”

Mallabaruah also said that the Cabinet approved the government taking a Rs 441-crore loan from NABARD for the development of rural infrastructure, including 24 rural roads-cum-embankments, 66 minor irrigation projects, the construction of 100 schools in tea garden areas, etc.
