GUWAHATI: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Wednesday that Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee was the epitome of the country's unity as he had strongly fought for the principle of 'ekbidhan, eknisan, ekpradhan' to abolish Article 370 of the Constitution of India that gave special status to Jammu & Kashmir.

The Chief Minister attended the Balidan Divas programme organized at historic Tangara Satra at Rukminigaon in Guwahati on Wednesday and offered his tributes to Dr Mookerjee.

On 23rd June 1953, the first Industry Minister of independent India, Dr Mookerjee was found dead in a mysterious condition in Jammu & Kashmir jail. The Balidan Divas is organized every year to commemorate his supreme sacrifice for the country's integrity and unity.

Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister said that the ideals of the founder of Bharatiya Jan Sangh, the precursor of the BJP, continue to inspire and guide people even now.

"Dr Mukerjee, who attained the post of Vice-Chancellor of Kolkata University at the age of 33 years, extended tremendous help in the expansion of Assamese language teaching. He even helped Lokapriya Gopinath Bardoloi in saving Assam from the grouping during partition along with West Bengal and East Punjab," the Chief Minister said.

Stating that Dr Mukerjee played a vital role in strengthening India's ties with Myanmar, Srilanka, Cambodia and Nepal, the Chief Minister highlighted the ideologue's pitch for a 'New Era of New Asia' at Cambodia. The Chief Minister called on the youth to dedicate themselves to the cause of the nation following the ideals of the great personality who sacrificed all for the country, a press release said.
