Over 8,000 volunteers register for war against COVID-19 pandemic

GUWAHATI: The State government had recently appealed to the people to join as volunteers against the COVID-19 pandemic. Responding to the appeal, as many as 8,617 volunteers have registered themselves as COVID warriors.

They are a part of the army of 'caregivers' of the State government and have become an additional line of defence for the State, besides encouraging the primary line of caregivers.

Out of the total volunteers, 7,496 are males, 956 are females and 165 are transgenders. As many as 6,271 volunteers are between 18 to 30 years of age, 2,064 volunteers between 31 to 45 years, 241 volunteers between 46 to 60 years; and 37 volunteers above 60 years.

The volunteers are indicating their skills in their respective area of contribution. According to reports, 3,271 volunteers are serving in the health services; 1,380 in communication; 231 in entrepreneurial; 1,616 in essential services; and 2,119 are engaging in other services.

The volunteers include people from all walks of life. Among them are 470 doctors, 120 nurses, 478 paramedics, 18 Asha workers, 9 Anganwadi workers, 216 medical students, 76 college teachers, 276 engineers, 168 government employees, 17 scientists, 2,355 students, 812 businessmen, 157 IT professionals, and 58 counselors.
